Closer Look At Unifying Rules In MMA
July 4, 2008

Happy 4th of July everyone!
New clarifications/modifications have been made by the Assocation of Boxing Commissions to the rules for mainstream mma. Some of the new items include:
Covering an opponent's mouth is now considered a foulThe downward elbow rule has been aboloished, except to the back of the headAlso, weight classes have been redefined by the ABC. 14 weight classes for men and 10 for women that breakdown as follows:
Men's weight classes now start at 110 and move in increments of 10 pounds per weight class all the way up to 200, the light heavyweight bracket is now 205-225lbs, 225-265lbs is now heavyweights, and 265+ is super heavyweights. If Zuffa followed these rules, they would be awarding 14 different titles rather than the 5 they currently have right now.
What this creates in the long run is more title bouts for organizations, but is that what they want? UFC would have to revamp their strongest pool of fighters, the 170lbs'ers. The same thing can be said about the other organizations such as WEC, Elite XC and Strikeforce. It seems it would spread the pool too thin on talent.
Most state commission review changes in rules annually and are not required to follow the rules but in not doing so, they will not be unified.

I heard that they are keeping women's @ 3 minute rounds with 90 seconds rest, I do'n't get that at all, not that I really watch women's fights but they should have it the same all around.
